EXPERIENCE  OF  ONE  DAY  WITH   UTUSAN  MALAYSIA  JOURNALIST

While under pressure to be the first to publish its stories, each news media organization adheres to its own standards of accuracy, quality, and style — usually editing and proofreading its reports prior to publication. Many news organizations claim proud traditions of holding government officials and institutions accountable to the public, while media critics have raised questions on the accountability of the press.

The word journalism is taken from the French journal which in turn comes from the Latin diurnal or daily; The Acta Diurna News-oriented journalism was described by former Washington Post editor, Phil Graham, as “a first rough draft of history”, because journalists often record important historical events as they are happening, but at the same time, they must produce their news articles on short deadlines.

Journalism exists in a number of media: newspapers, television, radio, magazines and, most recently, the World Wide Web through the Internet.

Print journalism can be split into several categories: newspapers, news magazines, general interest magazines, trade magazines, hobby magazines, newsletters, private publications, online news pages and others. Each genre can have its own requirements for researching and writing reports.

News magazine and general interest magazine articles are usually written in different styles, with less emphasis on the inverted pyramid. Trade publications can be more news-oriented, while hobby publications can be more feature-oriented.

Nazihah and I was arrived at Utusan Malaysia early morning around 8 o’clock on 17 February  (Sunday). Utusan Malaysia office was open at 10 o’clock. So, we waiting around for  2 hours. We saw one by one utusan staff and journalist was coming. I feel very fear and excitement. Who and which one journalist that we must follow ??? Majority of them are very serious and ignore the people around them. I feel fear and anxiety of them. I think positive with them. May be they are quite busy and have a lot work to do.

 

            After we waiting for a long time, at 10.10 a.m, Madam Rosni called  and bring Nazihah and I  to a newsroom. She as an editor of  Utusan Malaysia newspaper. I saw the newsroom are quite big and also have a lot of computer. The utusan newsroom are divide to a lot of sections like news, sport, crime and editing. So, Madam Rosni said that we must follow a journalist, Muhammad Ferzalfie. But, until now he’s not coming.

 

            At 11.30 a.m, Muhammad Ferzalfie was coming. So, Nazihah and I went to him and introduced ourselves to him. So, he said that for today he have to covered the news about an election on 3.30 p.m this evening. The news is happen at Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur. Actually, he said before this he was covered the news in sports section. But, the utusan not have enough the journalist especially around the election. He also said, “ I was like and interest to cover and make news about crimes and sports. It is because that news are quite easy and interest to cover and make news.

 

            As a journalist, at the morning he can see the assignment that he have in online. So, he can see the time, place that event happen. The journalist also must know who’s the photographer that must go and follow together to cover the news.

 

            After that,  he go out to cover the event until finish and get  an information. So, after finish, he must go back to newsroom to do and make a news. He must submit the news before 9 p.m to editor. The news editor can make an editing. If the news have mistake, so he must make an editing and recheque up the news again until the editor accepted the news.

 

            As a journalist must have higher showing patience and tolerance. Also know how to make time management. This job is quite busy and all the journalist must get ready go to anyway if the editor ask to go especially in emergency case happen. For the journalist must have theirselves transport. It is because easy go to anyway that event are happen.
