According Muhammad Marwan Ismail, 30, lecturer from Faculty of Major Languages Studies (FPBU) said, part-time work is no problem to all students especially for students that have not enough of money in studies. But, they must know how to manage the time between study and work. For example, if students take economic, accountant, business or trade course in university, so they are need to encouragement in work belonging to the present time in study. It is because, from the working the can have a new knowledge and experience before go to get a job after study. He said again, beside that, who is students that have to take the Art Course in Islamic Studies likes languages, counseling, communication, syariah, or designer also must know about the business and entrepreneurial especially before they finish study in any institution. It is because, to develop self-confidence for students. For example, in hostel have cafeteria, so whose interests do the part-time work as a cashier, waiter or waitress, and chef. So they can give their name to the manager of cafeteria. So, this is one way for the students that want to make a part-time work. So, from this business they can know about the target market, communication skills (hard-skill and soft-skill), budget (plan of income an expenditure), how to cook. They must have a suitable schedule for study, work, and curriculum activities and co-curriculum activities in hostel or campus. He added, “From the form 6 my father and I work at the paddy-field with buffalo. It is because I come from middling of family and also have a lot of siblings. So, I am the first from siblings and have a big liability. Rarely I don’t go to school because I want to help my father at paddy-field. So, after finish the work, my father gives me money. I use the money to buy the reference and exercise books and also school uniform. At night, I must study that what I learn in a classroom and also make an additional reading from other books that I borrow from library and my friends. I just use an oil-lamp because before this don’t have an electric. Then, I continued study at university in Egypt. At Egypt I also want to make a part-time work, but cannot. It is because the rule and procedure in Egypt don’t want students work while they stay studying. So, I stay use my saving money that I have before this.”

According to Mohd. Husni Mohd Yakin, 22, FPQS said, “I am started part-time work from the first semester on 2005 until now. It is because I don’t have enough money to continue my study until graduates. I got loan from PTPTN, but only half. I also have many siblings and I am eldest. So, at every night after pray Isyak I go to nasi lemak warung to sell it. I got supplier around Nilai. So, everyday I can finish my work until 12 p.m. After that, I go back to hostel and started my study such as do the assignment, revision with different subject, reading and understand note for tomorrow subject. I don’t have a suitable schedule for study and work but I can manage the time with myself. So, I can’t joint curriculum activities and co-curriculum activities in hostel or campus. After that, he works as a tuition teacher at Nilai Village Part around Nilam Court at last year on 2007. He got full loan from PTPTN, but still not enough. He works only on weekend day (Saturday and Sunday). It is because, he don’t want to take over time to study in campus. He also have schedule in study and work. It is because I have eleven siblings and my father works as taxi driver, my mother as a housewife. So, I got PTPTN loan, but still not enough because I give to my sibling buy any school equipments. I work at night around 3 hour’s perday and on the weekend 8 hours per day. If I got more free time, I can increase the time to work. I got RM 3 perhours. So, I think with this money enough for me to buy anything especially equipments in study and I also can used for buy clothes. But I think, not all students can do part-time works like this. It is because necessary to power energy and showing patience like students.
The several key of finding about part-time work among students over 60 per cent of Leaving Certificate students now have a regular part-time job. The prevalence of employment entailing considerable hours of work during the school week is concerning. Male students are particularly likely to work longer hours and to engage in weekday work. There is some evidence of social class background having an increasing impact on participation in part-time work, particularly in terms of engagement in more time-intensive jobs with students engaging in more intensive work increasingly less likely to be from more economically advantaged backgrounds.
The overwhelming motivation to engage in work is to finance a ‘lifestyle’ rather than because of financial difficulty or need. A concern over school grades is one of the main reasons cited for not engaging in such work, this concern being more prominent among females and Leaving Certificate students. Part-time work is associated with increased chances of early school leaving the risk of dropout is especially evident among young people working more than fifteen hours a week. Working students achieve lower grades than students not in paid employment. At Junior Certificate level working longer hours is related to lower Junior Certificate exam grades at Leaving Certificate level any level of involvement in paid work contributes to lower exam grades. There is, however, some support for the view that employment contributes to the broader development of young people, and appears to smooth young people’s transition into the labour market, with lower levels of unemployment and greater entry into white-collar employment among student workers.
my opinion regarding the part time job among students, i think there should be no problem, but student should give priorities to their studies first before they take the part time job…
